Two #Wikimania-Submissions

Zwei Worte vorweg: die Wikimania ist die Welt-Wikip/media-Konferenz und findet 2015 in Meixko City statt. Dort kann man hinfahren und Vorträge zu Sachen machen, die vage ins Wikiverse passen. Dafür muss man bis zum 28.2. Vorschläge einreichen. This I did.

For most new editors to the Wikimedia projects we don't know where they come from. Organised recruiting of new contributors to the Wikipedia projects so far has almost always been costly and rarely scaled.Most often organised efforts focused on offline activities and face-to.face meetings They involved rooms, volunteers, people who care and as a first step had to bridge the offline-online gap. There has to be a way to keep recruiting simpler, involving less organisation, less volunteer time and a starting point that is already online. Maybe there is inspiration in the wider world outside the Wikimedia projects?

In 2015 Wikimedia is not the only organisation any more that cares for healthy online communities and tries to recruit new editors. So we checked out what the world out there does to recruit the masses. Crowdsourcing grows more common and more successful all over the world. Inspired by crowdsourcing efforts used in many contexts we want to do some easy, lean, light-budget testing on whether recruiting methods that work for other organisations may also work for Wikimedia projects.

In 2015 we will go where potential editors are: online. We will try to reach many people using little resources in a way as simple as obvious; we will post some targeted ads on Facebook, maybe Google and other smaller channels.

To evaluate these efforts and to do some A/B testing We will also have an on-wiki landing page with a small survey for the "arrivals" and all the necessary Links to get the people set up for becoming new authors in the Wikipedia and other Wikimedia-projects.

In this talk we present our results, and discuss our approaches.

Recruiting new editors is not only of interest for us and should work in this way across cultures and continents. If you are interested in pitching in, helping us to set up landing pages, contribute data to similar projects, or just donate to the project contact us!

The Art of Trolling

Sometimes we love trolls, sometimes we hate them and sometimes trolls just leave us standing there, mouth wide open and utterly confused. But whatever our attitude is: nobody escapes trolls. They are everywhere: on wiki, on mailinglists, at conventions, on mailinglists about Wikis... But this is not a talk to lament, but one to celebrate. Indeed, trolls can be destructive in a most negative manner. But they don’t have to be. To troll means to do the unexpected, to play with expectations, to be disruptive and to do the action that is not supposed to happen - but this can be constructive and creative as well as destructive.

Historically some form of trolling has always been present in society. We will dig a little into this and how modern technologies radically changed the now widely used techniques of trolling. Through the excercises we hope to give the audience a better understanding of how trolling can disrupt everyday life in a productive manner - showcasing skills of both the old masters and the new.

Based on ten years of trolling experience as troll, admin and - most importantly - trolling admin, several years experience as professional community manager and polished up with actual scientific research this talk will offer:

A typology of trolls from the plain boring to the the unsettling one, the evil one to the inspiring troll.

The talk will showcase tips and tricks for effective trolling. It will showcase tips and tricks for playing with expectations - how to identify them, subvert them and turn them around in your favor.

Is trolling is done right everybody involed should have fun.

But good trolling is not only fun, it actually is a short way of solving problems and initiate solutions that in other ways could hardly be found. This presentation will give a short outlook on the uses trolling can have:

* it can de-escalate conflicts
* it can open up new perspectives
* it can integrate different viewpoints it
* can loosen up stalemate positions
* it can bring people together
